Green Solutions
Many opportunities exist in both new construction and renovation to provide energy-efficient buildings. Green building is a design and construction practice that promotes the economic health and well-being of people and the environment. Green building has been and continues to be a significant and exciting development in the construction industry over the past decade.
Buildings are becoming a large target for consumption-saving initiatives. According to the United Sates Green Building Council (USGBC), in the U.S. alone, buildings account for 71 percent of electricity consumption, 40 percent of energy consumption, 30 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, 30 percent of raw materials use, 30 percent of waste output (136 million tons annually) and 12 percent of potable water consumption.
The three major drivers behind the green movement include environmental, economic and health and community benefits.
- Environmental: Enhances and protects ecosystem and biodiversity by improving air and water quality, reducing solid waste and conserving natural resources.
- Economic: Reduces operating costs, enhances asset value and profits, improves employee productivity and satisfaction and optimizes life-cycle economic performance.
- Health and Community: Improves air, thermal and acoustic environments, enhances occupant comfort and health, minimizes strain on local infrastructure and contributes to the overall quality of life.
